A Sunday Gathering of Japanese Retro Computer Fans at Westerkade

Some Japan Fans are Japanese Retro Computer Fans! 😉 This past Sunday, March 3rd, 2024, a group of Japanese retro computer enthusiasts cycled their way to Westerkade for a delightful meeting.

We hope to have our own little Japanese retro computer museum one day, as a part of the Japanese Cultural Centre in Utrecht, and for some inspiration, we loved to visit KoffieLeute!

Japanese Retro Computer Fans at Westerkade

This past Sunday, a group of Japanese retro computer enthusiasts cycled their way to Westerkade for a delightful meeting. The venue for this nostalgic rendezvous was KoffieLeute, a charming spot known for its high-quality coffee, lo-fi cassettes, fresh sandwiches, vintage video games, homemade pastries, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that always feels chill. Additionally, KoffieLeute offers coffee to take home, ensuring that the delightful experience can be extended beyond the café.

Among the highlights of the gathering were the classic gaming consoles on display, including the Nintendo SNES, GameCube, and Sega MegaDrive. For those unfamiliar, the Nintendo SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) was released in 1990 and became iconic for its 16-bit graphics and beloved games like Super Mario World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The Nintendo GameCube, introduced in 2001, brought 128-bit processing power, offering a leap in graphics and gameplay with titles such as Super Smash Bros. Melee and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

Retro games

The Sega MegaDrive, known as the Sega Genesis in North America, hit the market in 1988. It was celebrated for its impressive library of games, including Sonic the Hedgehog and Streets of Rage, and its 16-bit graphics, which set new standards for home gaming at the time.

Bruce Lee

In addition to these gaming treasures, the meeting featured other retro and vintage Asian pop culture artefacts, such as Bruce Lee films shown on super 8. This blend of old-school gaming and classic cinema created an immersive nostalgic experience for all attendees.
