For CAMERA JAPAN 2021, Jolijn de Wolf and Martine Mussies designed a special performance with flute musics and ink drawings.

Japan has a rich flute tradition, strongly rooted in the natural as well as the spiritual world. For bamboo flutes such as the shakuhachi, shinobue, ryuteki, nohkan, special music has been composed for centuries, but people also play generic Japanese folk music on these basis. Our performance celebrates these traditions, by combining them with their visual counterparts in ink painting.

Paintings of flowers blossom via a projection on the wall of LantarenVenster, inspired by traditional Japanese ink techniques such as shodo and sumi-e. These paintings touch the viewer’s sensibility immediately through their simplicity and spontaneity.

Just as the flowers reflect a contemporary interpretation of centuries-old Japanese traditions, so does the music. Several composers have written new compositions especially for this performance. During this performance, a variety of flutes will be heard – from very low to very high.

Because body posture is important in both art forms, some of these new pieces of music also contain choreographic indications.
