More pictures from The Spirit of Kanji

We hope that you all had a wonderful holiday season and are as inspired and enthousiastic to start the new year as we are! To give you a glimpse into our forthcoming exhibitions, here are some more pictures from The Spirit of Kanji. Enjoy!

The 2023 version of our poster for “The Spirit of Kanji” (in Dutch) can be found all over Utrecht already!

Under the title “The Spirit of Kanji” (of in Dutch “De Kracht van Kanji”), the Utrecht based group Japan Fans is working on an artistic research, that examines whether people from (mostly East-)Asian descent feel at home in our city. We interviewed residents with Asian roots, and families in amongst others Japan, China and Korea and summarized each interview in a Kanji. This kanji was calligraphed and evolved further in various artworks, that are regularly on display in Utrecht. Keep an eye on our site and socials to see where you can see them live!

Our collage based on the interview with Toshio – “A bisexual Japanese at home in Utrecht” –
framed and on display at the Japan Fans exhibition in ACU, which started in October 2022.

We are also experimenting with our blueprints on a canvas.

As you might know, this is the character for “Moon”, or in Dutch: Maan.
We are currently exploring more abstract techniques as well…

Last but not least, this one means “dream”… what are your dreams for 2023?

The Japan Fans Utrecht dream of a central hub, a Japanese Art & Culture Centre in Utrecht, where they could work on projects like “The Spirit of Kanji” on a daily base. To make this dream come true, we need your help! With your support, we will establish ourselves as a stable non-profit organization and expand our first offering to further connect the community in the Netherlands. Support can be given in various ways, such as sharing our link, signing up as a volunteer, liking the Japanese Cultural Center page on Facebook, and/or making a donation to our crowdfunding campaign. Let’s make this dream a reality together!
